Life Drawing & Painting

• Newsprint pad - 18"x 24" or larger
• Watercolour paper pad 18"x24" or larger (Student-grade 140 lb is fine).
• 4-5 (18"x24") sheets of brightly coloured paper such as Canson Ingres. 
• 2-3 (18"x24") sheets of Black paper such as Canson Ingres
• 2 canvases - at least 16"x20" but can be larger if you wish.
• Lyra Watersoluble Graphite Crayon (9B is best, but if you already have something else, that's fine)
• Conte - Black, white, sanguine - any colours you may have
• Soft Black compressed charcoal or pastel
• Some coloured soft (Chalk) pastels - Rembrandt or NuPastel are excellent brands.
• Some oil pastels.
• Acrylic Paint:  A very basic kit of White, Black, Primary Red, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Unbleached Titanium, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Plus, any other colours that you like to work with. Buy Artists' Quality acrylics - you will be happier with the results. Inexpensive brands contain less pigment and are often not light-fast.
• Gesso - a small bottle is probably fine.
• Acrylic Modeling paste (a small tube or bottle will be sufficient)
• Paintbrushes for Acrylic Paint - a few different sizes (size 8 or larger)
• At least one 2" paintbrush (can be for house painting)
• Polymer Medium - Matte or Gloss
• Kneaded eraser
• Bulldog Clips
• Spray bottle for water
• Palette
• Water containers
• Paper towel roll
• Table covering

Optional but useful:

• Pastels - a variety of colours - both soft and/or oil. 
• Scrapers - 2" to 4" plastic putty scrapers 
• Texture-making tools - plastic knives, plastic forks, sticks, etc.
• Sponges
• Any drawing supplies you have that you'd like to use.

Mandatory Studio Safety Practices

Your health and safety are our priorities. Our studio environments can have a number of objects, tools and chemicals that require personal protective equipment (PPE) or other considerations for your well-being. All persons (including faculty, staff and students) are asked to observe the following while in the shops and studios:

• Wear sturdy and appropriate shoes such as sneakers, closed leather shoes or work boots. Open-toed shoes, flip-flops or high heels are not allowed
• No long, dangling clothing or accessories (scarves, flowing sleeves, chains, long necklaces, etc).
• Long hair must be tied back
• No bare skin if exposure to chemicals or tools/machinery is likely
• Appropriate PPE is mandatory when operating tools and equipment within the studios.
• Please consult with the faculty or studio technician to determine the appropriate PPE required for specific machines and studio processes.

Fit tests are required for courses requiring a respirator, as noted on your material list. Arrangements will be made on-site. As these are mandatory safety practices, we will follow up directly with students who may have oversighted the above. Individuals may be asked to address any concerns before continuing to work in the studio. Be sure to buy appropriate, good-quality safety articles and equipment, i.e. safety boots, protective eyewear, hearing protection, work gloves, x-acto knives, etc. - ask your supplier for advice.
