Coloured Pencils

The materials I'll provide for experimentation are (in limited quantities):

• Watercolour paints
• Markers
• Solvents to create washes
• A few different paper samples
• Photo references

Materials List:  

• Pencils for sketching 
• Eraser: regular, electric and/or kneaded 
• Coloured Pencils: wax-based or oil-based or both as they can be mixed
• I have large sets of coloured pencils but choosing a small mixed set or buying a few single colours (open stock) will be fine for this course. 

EXAMPLE Basic Coloured Pencil Palette: 

• Lemon yellow 
• Yellow ochre 
• Orange 
• Burnt ochre 
• Burnt sienna 
• Light Pink 
• Bright red 
• Dark red 
• Light blue 
• Bright (medium) blue 
• Indigo blue (or navy) 
• Light green 
• Medium and/or dark green 
• Light grey 
• Medium grey 
• Payne's grey 
• Black 
• White 

Note: A blender pencil and a burnishing pencil are also handy but optional. 

 

• Paper: A good, basic drawing paper is enough for the course but I'll be demonstrating on a wide variety of papers. I suggest having a few options on hand to figure out what you like best. Such as;

•  Sketching paper 
•  A good quality white drawing paper with some texture (i.e. Canson, Mi-Teintes) 
• SMOOTH paper such as a Bristol smooth 
• Smooth (hot press) watercolour paper 
• Black and Coloured paper (I like Mi-Teintes coloured papers and Strathmore Black mixed media 
•  A white or coloured sanded pastel paper such as Pastelmat

• Paper towels, Kleenex or toilet paper 

• Tracing paper and transfer paper (to transfer sketches to the good paper) 

• Electric eraser or a kneaded eraser (optional) 

• Masking tape 

• PHOTO REFERENCES: I believe you should draw what has meaning to you. Please feel free to bring as many photo references as you like. For example we’ll be covering animals, still lives, food, landscapes and human portraits.

NOTE: Don't feel you need to buy a lot of expensive supplies. You can always add to your selection later if you enjoy using coloured pencil. A few different coloured pencils and a decent drawing paper will work just fine. I’ll be demonstrating how to use mixed mediums under your coloured pencil work to create depth and various textural effects. If you have watercolour paints, markers, inks or panpastel that you’d like to bring with you please do. I’ll also be providing examples of these materials in class that you’re welcome to experiment with if you don’t have your own. 

Mandatory Studio Safety Practices 

  

Your health and safety is our priority. Our studio environments can have a number of objects, tools and chemicals that require personal protective equipment (PPE) or other consideration for your well-being. All persons (including faculty, staff and students) are asked to observe the following while in the shops and studios: 
 

• Wear sturdy and appropriate shoes such as sneakers, closed leather shoes or work boots open-toed shoes, flip-flops or high heels are not allowed. 

• No long, dangling clothing or accessories (scarves, flowing sleeves, chains, long necklaces, etc.). 

• Long hair must be tied back. 

• No bare skin if exposure to chemicals or tools/machinery is likely. 

• Appropriate PPE is mandatory when operating tools and equipment within the studios. 

• Please consult with the faculty or studio technician to determine the appropriate PPE required for specific machines and studio processes. 
   

Fit tests are required for courses requiring a respirator as noted on your material list. Arrangements will be made on-site. As these are mandatory safety practices, we will follow up directly with students who may have oversighted the above. Individuals may be asked to address any concerns before continuing to work in the studio. Be sure to buy appropriate, good-quality safety articles and equipment, i.e. safety boots, protective eyewear, hearing protection, work gloves, x-acto knives, etc. - Ask your supplier for advice.
