16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence
16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence
Fleming College is proud to stand in solidarity with individuals and organizations around the world by participating in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This international campaign runs from November 2 to December 10, and aims to raise awareness, inspire action, and promote meaningful change.
We're kicking off 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence 2024 by coming together to ACT NOW. If you witness a potentially harmful situation unfolding, don't be a bystander! Intervene as safely as possible by distracting the perpetrator, delegating others to help out, documenting the situation, delaying the harm, and being direct about ending sexual violence.
Don't forget to wear purple today in support of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against. 💜
Join us in the foyer of Sutherland Campus (November 26) and Frost Campus (November 27) from 10:00am - 2:00pm for activities, snacks and more to help you ease stress as you work through the last few weeks of the semester. A number of campus services will also be at the event including Counselling, Health Services and Campus Safety.
Campus Security is available for all your safety needs. From campus safe walks to safety planning, Campus Security is available 24/7, 365 days a year across all Fleming campuses. Dial 4444 for emergencies, or 8000 for general inquiries to directly speak with our security guards on site. You can also download the Fleming Safe app for all campus news and ways to keep yourself safe.
Fleming College's Sexual Violence Support Services works with students who wish to disclose and report sexual assault, seek out resources for counselling and sexual health, and gain education on how to create a campus free of sexual violence. Support can be offered to survivors, their friends, peers and loved ones. Don't hesitate to reach out to Debbie (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) and Lynn (Student Rights & Responsibilities) on how to navigate your experience, immigration journey, academics, and life beyond. We believe you! 💜
Myth: International students can be deported if they report sexual violence.
Fact: This is a lie aimed at intimidating you into silence.
Reports are confidential. If you file a formal report with the police or the College as the person harmed by sexual or gender-based violence, neither immigration nor your home country will know. Fleming College will never share your personal information with immigration, your family, teachers, or classmates without your consent. We believe you, we're here to listen!
To file a report, go to the Fleming College Online Incident Report Form.
Ending sexual violence starts with consent; freely given, enthusiastic, ongoing, and informed (Government of Canada). Are your relationships consensual? Fleming College is fortunate to be supported by a wide range of community services addressing gender-based violence. Whether in Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, or Haliburton, students and employees will find a range of services including 24-hour crisis lines, individual counselling, support groups, education, housing and other emergency services. Learn more at Sexual Violence Support Services.
"Knock, knock! Who's there?!" Residence is committed to a safe, welcoming and inclusive living environment conducive to learning. You deserve a great place to call home. We are here to support all students living on campus to help you succeed.
Just because you consent once does not mean you have consented for all time to come. Section 278 of the Criminal Code specifies that a spouse may be charged with sexual assault - your spouse or partner has the right to say ‘no'! (OHCHR.org 2020) Forced marriage, where pressure or abuse is used to ‘force' one or both people to marry against their will, is also a form of gender-based violence. Learn more at the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario.
White Ribbon is the world's largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, promote gender equity, healthy relationships, and a new vision of masculinity. Drop by the foyer between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to get a ribbon and learn about:
- Challenging jokes and behaviours that support sexual harassment.
- Transforming stereotypes about masculinity that contribute to inequality.
Today, we commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and those who have lost their lives to gender-based violence.
"I had no choice, I had to get to placement and no one else could drive me out of town. I have to complete placement to pass!"
"I need this job. When my boss touches me, I don't say anything."
"I can't pay my rent this month. My landlord says he'll give me money for photos."
Sexual harassment and extortion are real and increase your risk of being sex trafficked. Get the facts at Public Safety Canada. We're here to help. Sexual Violence Support Services
Who is at risk of being sexually assaulted? What happens if you choose to disclose and report? Where does sexual violence take place on campus? When do the police get involved? Why don't people know about this? How do we come together and act now in support of survivors? Find more resources about sexual and gender-based violence on our Sexual Violence Support Services webpage!
How do people in your life talk about violence in relationships? How do their views affect your decisions? Our experiences of gender-based violence are shaped by colonialism, sexism, ableism, and economic marginalization, among many other social structures that create inequality. Please visit the Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children website for more trauma-informed resources, or find a community resource that understands your experience.
Today is International Human Rights Day, when we celebrate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Fleming College will hold our final event of the 16 Days of Activism at Sutherland campus today with a Listening Tour. Peer Mentors will travel the campus, asking students about their experiences of human rights, and sharing resources for dealing with harassment and discrimination. Learn more about Your Human Rights.
