Webinar Wednesday Recap: Pharmacy Technician

Published

Last week, we hosted a Webinar Wednesday session shining a spotlight on our Pharmacy Technician program. If you couldn’t join us virtually, don’t worry. Below are the highlights from the session, along with the full recording below to watch at your convenience.

Fleming College’s Pharmacy Technician program, within the School of Health and Community Services, is recognized for its hands-on learning and supportive faculty. Prospective students joined Romina from Student Recruitment, Sol from Fleming’s International team, and Katie Roy, Program Coordinator for the Pharmacy Technician program, to learn more about what to expect from this hands-on, career focused program.

Why Pharmacy Technician at Fleming?

The Pharmacy Technician program at Fleming is designed to prepare students for real pharmacy environments from day one. With a strong balance of theory, hands-on lab training, and supervised placements, students graduate with the skills and confidence needed to work in both community and hospital pharmacy settings. The program equips graduates with practical experience, professional confidence, and a clear path into a growing healthcare field.

Three Key Takeaways

1. You’ll build a strong foundation before moving into hands-on training

The Pharmacy Technician program is designed to ease students into the profession. In the first year, you’ll focus on core courses such as anatomy and physiology, pharmacy practice, professionalism, pharmacy software, and medication safety. Pharmacy math and pharmacy products are emphasized early, as understanding dosages and medications is essential before progressing further in the program.

As students move into later semesters, these fundamentals are applied through more advanced coursework, including pharmacology, clinical pathology, and drug distribution. This step-by-step structure helps students feel prepared and confident as the program becomes more hands-on.

2. Students train in realistic retail and hospital-style labs

A major highlight of the webinar was a walkthrough of Fleming’s pharmacy labs. The retail lab is designed to look and function like a real community pharmacy, complete with a medication wall, dispensing stations, patient counselling areas, and pharmacy software used in the industry.

Students also train in a hospital lab that includes a clean room and sterile compounding hoods. Here, students learn sterile preparation techniques, unit dose packaging, and hospital dispensing workflows. Each student has their own workstation, allowing them to practice skills independently without waiting for shared equipment.

3. Placement and career prep are built into the program

Hands-on experience continues outside the classroom through two placements. Students complete a 200-hour community pharmacy placement and a 160-hour institutional placement, gaining real-world experience in retail and hospital settings. Placements are supported by the college, with surveys used to help match students to preferred locations when possible.

The program also prepares students for what comes next, including licensing exams, resume and interview skills, and workplace expectations. Many students are hired directly through their placements, and demand for pharmacy technicians remains strong across the sector.
