Business, education and community development students can earn a diploma and degree in as little as four years

Fleming College graduates from business, fishing and wildlife, and mental health and addictions programs can take their education further and earn degrees in Business Administration, Social Work or Indigenous Bachelor of Education at Trent University thanks to four new articulation agreements between the two institutions.

“Trent University is pleased to continue to collaborate with our postsecondary partners at Fleming College on new pathways for students to transition to degree studies and achieve career success,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice chancellor of Trent University. “Building on Trent’s reputation as one of the province’s most transfer credit friendly institutions, these new pathways will support graduates in gaining in-demand skills to contribute to economies both locally, across Canada and around the world.”

“Growing our partnership with Trent University is important to Fleming College,” adds Maureen Adamson, president of Fleming College. “It emphasizes the rich higher education opportunities that exist in the Peterborough area. We are expanding transfer pathway options in Indigenous education, mental health and addictions, and the new business administration agreements will allow our students to earn a diploma and degree in the same amount of time as it takes for a university degree alone.”

Students chart their own course to careers in business

Two of the four new agreements establish pathways for graduates of Fleming College’s Business or Business Human Resources programs to receive ten credits towards their Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Trent University. Trent’s prestigious School of Business equips students with versatile learning experiences, and is one of the only universities to offer joint majors to students in Business Administration. Trent students can also specialize their degree studies further in areas including finance, economics, marketing and consumer culture, and human resource management.

Developing skills for Social Work practitioners and policy makers

Graduates of Fleming College’s Mental Health and Addictions Worker Diploma program will be able to fast-track into Trent’s Bachelor of Social Work, a fully accredited program that supports students in becoming registered social workers after graduation. Graduates of Fleming’s program will receive five credits towards their degree. At Trent, Social Work students have the opportunity to complete 700 hours of hands-on supervised field placement in the professional years of the program.

Honouring Indigenous heritage through education

The fourth agreement creates a pathway for Fleming Fish and Wildlife Technology advanced diploma graduates who self-identify as Indigenous to enter to Trent’s Indigenous Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program, a first-of-its-kind program in North America. The Indigenous B.Ed. fosters a new generation of Indigenous educators who honour the culture, language, and knowledge of Indigenous students. Graduates from Fleming’s Fish and Wildlife Technology advanced diploma program will receive ten transfer credits toward their Indigenous Bachelor of Education at Trent.

Building on a long-standing partnership of offering programs to assist students in making the transition from diploma to degree, Trent and Fleming now offer more than 25 pathways for students to gain the best of both the college and university experience.
