Training as a Pre-Service Firefighting Student at Fleming College

Published

When I first stepped onto Fleming College’s campus, I knew I was starting more than just a program. I was stepping into my dream. My name is Chloe Despatie, and I’m currently in Fleming’s Pre-Service Firefighting program, chasing a lifelong goal to become a firefighter. Ever since I can remember, I’ve wanted to do something meaningful, something that would make a difference in people’s lives. Firefighting is that calling for me.

Why Firefighting?

For me, it’s simple: I’ve always believed in showing up for people when they need it most. Firefighting is not just a job, it’s a commitment to protect, serve, and put others first. I’ve never been afraid of hard work, and I’m determined to never give up on my dream.

Life in the Pre-Service Firefighting Program

The program at Fleming has been nothing short of transformative. From hands-on training to learning about fire theory, every day in the program challenges me to grow physically, mentally, and emotionally. The instructors bring real-world experience into every lesson, and the camaraderie among my classmates feels like a second family.

Living and Breathing FireFit

On top of my studies, I’m a proud member of the Fleming FireFit Combat Team. FireFit is the ultimate firefighter challenge: a timed obstacle course simulating real-life fireground tasks. It’s intense, demanding, and rewarding. Being part of this team pushes my limits, builds my strength, and teaches me the value of working under pressure; lessons I’ll carry into my career.

Serving My Community

Outside of Fleming, I’m honoured to volunteer with Douro-Dummer Fire Station 1. Being a volunteer firefighter allows me to take what I’ve learned in the classroom and apply it in real emergencies. It’s humbling work, and it reinforces why I chose this path in the first place.

From Social Media to the Fire Hall

One thing that surprises people is that alongside firefighting, I have a huge passion for social media. I work as a student worker in Fleming’s Marketing department, creating social media content that captures student life and tells the stories that make our college unique. On top of that, I run my own social media platforms full-time, collaborating with brands and building a career in digital marketing.

Balancing It All

Juggling firefighting training, volunteering, FireFit competitions, marketing work, and social media might sound impossible, but it’s all about passion and discipline. I thrive on structure, planning my days carefully and making sure I stay focused on what matters most. When you love what you do, the “busy” becomes exciting rather than overwhelming.

My Advice to Students

If I could give one piece of advice, it would be this: chase the dream that scares you a little but excites you a lot. Don’t be afraid of hard work, long days, or moments when you feel like giving up. Balance comes from knowing your priorities, staying organized, and remembering why you started. You can do more than you think, and sometimes, the busier your life, the fuller it becomes.

Every step I take at Fleming is another step toward my dream of becoming a firefighter. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
