The Great Neighbourhood Campaign
Peterborough ON – (September 17, 2018) – The tenth annual Fleming College Great Neighbourhood Campaign will take place on Tuesday, September 18 in Peterborough, and Tuesday, September 25 in Lindsay. Fleming College student leaders and staff will once again partner with the Peterborough Police Service, the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service and other community partners to welcome students living off-campus into the community and talk about what it means to be a great neighbour.
The team of student leaders, police members including Auxiliary members, and community partners will walk the neighbourhood surrounding the campus where students and permanent residents interact on a regular basis and will hand out copies of Fleming College’s Good Neighbour Guide.
The Guide highlights the needs and responsibilities of students, landlords and local homeowners. Included in the guide are good neighbour tips around keeping it quiet, keeping it clean, helping out, partying responsibly, parking and traffic rules, personal safety tips for students, community involvement and conflict resolution. The Guide states: “By understanding and respecting everyone’s needs, we believe our neighbourhoods will be more connected, inclusive, supportive, safe and enjoyable for all.”
“Our Service is committed to community policing and community partnerships, such as this campaign, that make our neighbourhoods inclusive, safe and vibrant places to live, work and play,” said Peterborough Police Constable Justin O’Neill, Area 3 Team Member, the area in which Fleming College is located. “We know that great neighbourhoods are created when those living there, whether permanent residents or students living off campus, take the time to get to know each other, respect each other and make everyone feel welcome and included.”
In recognition of its tenth anniversary, the Good Neighbourhood Campaign has evolved to include a series of events through September and October, to signal the name change to the Great Neighbourhood Campaign.
As Fleming College expands opportunities to teach students through lived experiences about their civic responsibilities, new events include a community clean-up, speaking with students living on-campus about their role in the community and expanded resources available to both students and landlords at the Fleming College off-campus housing website.
“This is an exciting time of year as students return to our campus communities,” said Rob Marsh, General Manager of Housing Services, Fleming College. “Over the past 10 years, the Good Neighbourhood Campaign has provided an example how Fleming takes an active role with our community partners to work proactively to engage local residents and students in a positive way. This program has been successful in large part because of the strong partnership with the Police Services, community members and the Fleming College student leadership groups across the College including student governments. We look forward to strengthening our ties in the community we live while we strengthen existing relationships and develop new ones to make our neighbourhoods great.”
More than 50 volunteers at both campuses combined make this event a success. Fleming College Housing Services wants to thank everyone for volunteering their time as this initiative demonstrates another way the College is committed to collaborating and prospering within our community.
Participants will include Peterborough City Counsellor Leslie Parnell; Peterborough Police Services; City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service; the Student Administrative Council; the Frost Student Association; Residence Student Leaders and numerous College staff. Student leaders participating in the Great Neighbourhood Campaign will earn a co-circular record (CCR) for their involvement.
Media are invited and welcome to attend the first portion of the evening. Media wishing to attend are asked to arrive at 5:30 p.m. at the Sutherland Residence Village, located at 1 Residence Circle at the Fleming College Sutherland campus.
