The Future of Welding: Fleming College’s Welding Industry Showcase

Published

Fleming College’s Welding Industry Showcase once again brought students, industry professionals, faculty, and community members together for an engaging day of project presentations, portfolio displays, and valuable networking opportunities. Held at the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre (KTTC), the 2026 showcase highlighted the skill, innovation, and bright future of welding in Ontario and beyond.

Students proudly presented a wide range of work, from detailed metal art to complex fabrication projects, demonstrating both the technical expertise developed in the classroom and the creativity fostered through hands-on learning.

Our second semester Welding Techniques students showcased their portfolios and projects highlighting their skills and progress made throughout the semester. Portfolios highlighted a range of hands-on work, from precision welds to more complex projects, giving students a platform to demonstrate their technical abilities and attention to detail.

Our fourth semester Welding and Fabrication Technician students showcased their culminating projects, designed to simulate real-world fabrication scenarios. These projects required students to apply a broad range of skills while meeting industry standards and expectations.

This year’s featured project involved the fabrication and welding of a pressure vessel, a critical component used to contain gases or liquids under pressure in industries such as energy, manufacturing, and food processing. Students were responsible for interpreting technical drawings, selecting appropriate materials, and preparing joints for full-penetration welds. They utilized multiple welding processes including SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), and GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), all while maintaining strict quality control, cleanliness, and temperature management throughout multiple weld passes.

Completed projects underwent visual inspection and pressure testing using non-destructive testing methods. This process allowed students to identify areas for improvement, make adjustments, and re-test, reinforcing the importance of precision and accountability in the trade.

Conversations throughout the day made it clear that welding at Fleming is more than just a program, it is a community. With the support of dedicated faculty and strong industry partnerships, students are empowered to explore their potential, refine their skills, and prepare for meaningful careers in the trades.

Congratulations to all students who participated in this year’s showcase and in the completion of their studies. We look forward to seeing the impact you will make in the industry.
