Students find solutions to water and wastewater management challenges

Published

Lindsay ON – (November 24, 2010) – Students in Fleming College’s Environmental Technology program have spent the semester researching innovative solutions to environmental and engineering challenges related to water and wastewater management.

On Tuesday, Nov. 30 the students will present their research findings through project displays set up in the Discovery Trail at the Frost Campus from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Water quality and sanitation are a key concern, not only locally in the Kawartha Lakes area, but also around the world. The projects focus on emerging science and technologies, as well as new-found environmental issues.

Projects this year include:
•    Biological sand filters for drinking water
•    Stormwater wetlands and water recycling
•    Using fungal mycellia for treatment of solid waste
•    Floating island wetlands for degrading water bodies
•    Designing a wind-powered mixing system for a floating wetland island
•    Comparing the effectiveness of different media in wastewater treatment

The projects are part of the Constructed Wetlands course students take within the three-year Environmental Technology program.
