Students awarded for innovative solutions created for Fleming College’s Innovation and Technology Showcase

Published

Peterborough ON – (July 27, 2020) Ten teams of Fleming students have been recognized and awarded for creating unique and innovative solutions for real-world challenges as part of the College’s annual Innovation and Technology Showcase sponsored by Bell.

The projects are typically on display during a public event and judged by community partners and faculty members. Due to the physical distancing restrictions caused by COVID-19, the Showcase was cancelled. Despite the cancellation of all in-person events, students were able to virtually work with sponsors from industry and non-profit sectors to find innovative solutions to a business-or technology-related problem.

“The Innovation and Technology Showcase is an important networking event for our students to connect with industry partners and gain valuable hands-on experience that prepares them for the labour market,” said Maureen Adamson, Fleming College President. “We were pleased that the Showcase could continue in a virtual format and thankful to Bell for providing a sponsorship of $10,000 toward prizes for the top 10 projects.”

Fleming’s School of Business and School of Trades and Technology students worked on their projects throughout the winter prior to the College moving to online and alternative format. The students gained academic credit and on-the-job experience by undertaking these supervised applied projects. At the same time, the project results provide new information, answer questions, contribute to planning and lay the groundwork for future innovations.

The Innovation and Technology Showcase prizes will be given to the top 10 teams of graduating students who demonstrated innovation and strong work ethic in the planning and execution of their applied project, while maintaining high academic standards. Each team will receive $1,000 to be shared among its team members.
