Published

Leveraging her education and work experience, Fleming graduate Christi Brumwell is steadily climbing the career ladder, finding success with each step she takes.Christi, a Dual Security Officer/Private Investigator working for the provincial government, graduated from the Security and Risk Management program (formerly the Fire Safety Security Management program) in 2003.“Due to the unlimited opportunities within the Law and Justice programs at Fleming College, there are numerous job possibilities for a successful career in the industry,” she says, citing her own experience as a prime example. After graduation, Christi was hired on as a security officer at Kawartha Downs, joining a team of three other officers. Her main responsibilities included assisting and complying with policies and procedures when removing persons from the property, thorough foot and vehicle patrols and interior security of the main building.A large role within that position was enforcing the Trespass to Property Act, Liquor License Act and Power of Arrest, as well as familiarity with areas of Ontario law regarding intoxication levels and gambling, she says.In June 2005 a new position, Security Supervisor, was created for the expanding security office at Kawartha Downs. Christi applied and was the successful candidate.“In just over a year, I had optimized my knowledge from Fleming and utilized it with the skills I had developed in the Security field and proved myself capable for the new position,” she says.As Security Supervisor, Christi began transforming the department into a more computer-friendly environment. She oversaw a staff of 15 security officers and one medical personnel. She says that her report writing in the new position required greater complexity and she was introduced to conducting and thoroughly documenting for possible litigation suits.Another aspect of the supervisor position was that Christi was able to sit in, interview, hire and train new employees, as well as re-train and cross-train existing employees.“My position at Kawartha Downs was a huge stepping stone into the industry, and I feel that a main part of my success was due to the knowledge I received at Fleming College.”Christi spent a year at Kawartha Downs after her promotion before taking the position with the provincial government, where she is now investigating labour disputes. She has continued stayed in touch with Program Coordinator Nancy Newton and in 2005 Christi organized a volunteer program for students of Fleming’s School of Law and Justice.
