Peterborough ON – John Sillberg, Academic Team Leader for the School of Technology and Skilled Trades at Fleming College, has won a 2007 Glenn Beatty Award from Skills Canada – Ontario.  Mr. Sillberg was selected for the award due to his volunteer support of Skills Canada – Ontario summer camps and student-parent nights, which has contributed to the success of Skills Canada – Ontario programs in the Peterborough area.  "I’m delighted to see John Sillberg receive this recognition. John helps students discover and move into excellent career opportunities. He’s a great ambassador for the skilled trades and a great partner for business and industry," says Fleming College President Dr. Tony Tilly. Mr. Sillberg will receive the award on Wednesday, May 2 at the closing ceremony of the Ontario Technological Skills Competition in Kitchener.  The award is named for Glenn Beatty, who tragically died in a car accident in 1999. Glenn was a gold medal winner in Precision Machining at the Canadian Skills Competition in 1997. He returned to Skills Canada – Ontario as a volunteer in 1998 and the award is a tribute to those who embody Glenn’s dedication and passion for Skills Canada – Ontario. “The Glenn Beatty Award is a terrific honour,” says Mr. Sillberg. “It is really a testament to the hard work of the faculty and staff in the School of Technology and Skilled Trades who work diligently to assist with the skilled trades-based summer camps and events such as student and parent evenings.” Skills Canada – Ontario is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting skilled trades and technologies as viable, first-choice career options to Ontario youth.
