Grade 7 students ‘Tech it Out’ at Fleming College
LINDSAY, ON – Sixty eager girls and boys from elementary public schools in the City of Kawartha Lakes, Muskoka, and Haliburton will be at Fleming College in Peterborough to “Tech It Out” May 25-29. Trillium Lakelands District School Board has partnered with Fleming College to offer a unique skilled trades residential camp experience to Grade 7 students.
Tech It Out is more than just getting students excited about skilled trades – it’s about inspiring and offering them the opportunity to explore skilled trades as a viable career path. The students, who will be housed overnight in Fleming residences, will spend three days accessing engaging programs and activities at Fleming’s Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre. Each student will create a take home project. Through the building of this project, students will experience carpentry, plumbing, welding, electrical, solar energy, culinary, and arboriculture.
“This is a powerful and inspiring opportunity for our students,” stated Director of Education Larry Hope, “Helping students embrace the importance of skilled trades will help in making good course selection choices in secondary school.”
Trillium Lakelands District School board offers a range of hands-on student opportunities in secondary school including the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM), Dual Credits, Co-operative Education, and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).
“Nearly one in five jobs in Ontario is expected to be in trades-related occupations in the future,” said Board Chair, Louise Clodd, “Having students come to this wonderful facility at Fleming to gain some hands-on experience is really great.”
“The skilled trades and technology fields offer a wealth of rewarding and exciting career choices,” said Fleming College President Tony Tilly. “This type of immersive experience ensures younger students can try a variety of trades in a stimulating hands-on environment, which kindles in them the possibility and potential of a future in the trades. We look forward to welcoming these students to Fleming and providing them with a meaningful, memorable experience.”
Members of the media are invited to visit the camp in the KTTC Skills Arena or at the Frost Campus.
