New mental health awareness benches and First Responders Cup fundraiser

Published

benchesPeterborough ON – (Jan. 26, 2017) – Fleming College yesterday announced two initiatives to support mental health on campus and in the community.

The College unveiled two benches – one each for Sutherland and Frost campuses – built by Carpentry students that represent a physical space for people to come together and communicate or solely reflect. The benches are further intended to illustrate Fleming’s commitment to developing, supporting and maintaining an environment for positive mental health.

Two Carpentry Apprentice students, Brad Morey and Mike Payne, designed and built the benches with materials donated by Chemong Home Hardware.

The College also announced details about an upcoming fundraiser in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA KPR). The First Responders Cup will take place on Saturday, March 11 at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre.

The event is an eight-hour challenge involving eight teams of six people each. The teams will rotate through eight fitness circuits – one per hour – throughout the day. The team with the fastest cumulative time over all eight circuits will win the cup.

Faculty member Jodi van Engen along with students in the Police Foundations and Pre-Service Firefighter program are organizing the event. The cost is $300.00 per team with all funds going to CMHA HKPR. For more information or to register, visit: https://raceroster.com/events/2017/11661/first-responders-cup.

Fleming College’s Mental Health Initiative team and Student Administrative Council also hosted activities in the main foyer during the day. These included exercise bikes for students and employees to take a wellness break as well as a craft table, and information and resources on mental health supports at Fleming and in the community. The events tied into Bell Let’s Talk Day. Students and staff were encouraged to talk, text and tweet in support of mental health.
