Fleming College

Peterborough ON – (June 13, 2019) – Fleming College will receive $2,899,974 in research funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program. The funding announcement was made today at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario as part of a national announcement by the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport.

Fleming College will be home to Canada’s Industrial Research Chair for Colleges (IRCC) in Predictive Water Network Analytics, an increasingly essential field when it comes to solving critical challenges faced by cities around the world. The aim of the proposed program, to be carried out by Fleming College’s Dr. Reza Moslemi, P.Eng., will be to collaborate with partner companies on the development of a reliable predictive failure detection system that supports municipalities through pipeline asset management, planning, and maintenance services. This research will lead to expanded market opportunities for innovative service providers, improved protection of our shared water resources, and millions of dollars of savings by municipalities. NSERC’s IRCC program attracts and supports the retention of preeminent scholars and subject-expert researchers. The award totals $1 million over five years with an equal amount of cash and in-kind from industry partners.

In addition to IRCC funding, Fleming College’s Centre for Advancement of Water and Wastewater Technologies (CAWT), which became an NSERC Technology Access Centre (TAC) in 2014, was awarded renewed five-year funding to continue its world-class water research.

“At a time when water-related regulations across Canada are becoming more stringent, these funds will advance the CAWT’s capacity to provide the innovation support services sought after by the water and wastewater industry,” continued Adamson. “The awards solidify Fleming’s well-established reputation as a leader in water and wastewater applied research.”

Funding from the CCI Program Applied Research Tools and Instruments grant will be used to acquire sophisticated laboratory equipment that will advance the Centre’s service offerings.

About the Centre for Advancement of Water and Wastewater Technologies

The Centre for Advancement of Water and Wastewater Technologies (CAWT) is a unique water research centre with advanced infrastructure and accredited on-site facilities. Located in Lindsay, Ontario at the Frost Campus of Fleming College, the CAWT works with industry, government, NGOs and other academic institutions to develop and test innovative water and wastewater technologies. The CAWT is comprised of a core group of project managers, scientists, faculty researchers, and technologists passionate about driving innovation in the water and wastewater sector, supporting small- to medium-sized companies, and helping find new ways to protect, reuse, treat, and manage the world’s water.
