Fleming College to launch Sustainable Agriculture program
Frost Campus to host innovative new post-graduate program set to start January 2010Fleming College’s Frost Campus will launch a new Sustainable Agriculture program in January 2010.This innovative one year, three-semester, post-graduate certificate program is designed for new and beginner farmers seeking an intensive, applied learning experience in sustainable, ecological, organic or natural farming. Farming practices in the program are based on environmental stewardship, social responsibility, community health and the capacity for farmers to create a dependable income.The program follows the progression of the farm year. Experienced farmers and practitioners will guide students in the program, which is enriched with farm field days, site visits, and community-based learning activities. There is also an 18-week summer co-op experience to create further opportunities for student specialization.Within the program, students will learn the principles and practices of sustainable agriculture, small farm operations, and explore the emergence of new and expanding niche markets. Students will also examine strategies for direct marketing and new farm business models – with the program culminating in the development of each student’s own business case and farm plan.
