Fleming College Recognizes Indigenous History Month with Interactive Events Across Campuses
Fleming College invites the public to join in celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day and Indigenous History Month through two interactive events that honour the histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples.
Lacrosse – The Creator’s Game
Hosted by Fleming’s Indigenous Student Services in partnership with Fleming Phoenix Athletics, Lacrosse – The Creator’s Game is a free, interactive event exploring the Indigenous roots of Canada’s national summer sport. The event will take place on Wednesday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus (599 Brealey Drive, Peterborough). All community members are welcome to attend. No lacrosse experience is necessary, and lunch will be provided. No registration is required; those interested in attending can meet in Room D1 114 at 10 a.m. to start the day.
Participants will gain insight into the cultural and spiritual significance of lacrosse from two of the sport’s most passionate advocates:
Jim Calder – Canadian Lacrosse and Canadian Sports Hall of Famer, author, and foundational figure in the development of lacrosse in Canada.
Justin Warner – Professional player with the Oshawa Outlaws, high-level coach, and founder of Liftlock Lacrosse Company.
Together, Jim and Justin represent the legacy and future of lacrosse in Canada. Fleming College is honoured to host this dynamic duo for a day of learning, play, and celebration.
Lunch Hour Medicine Walk in the Haliburton Sculpture Forest
Join Matt Levac for a medicinal plant walk through the Haliburton Sculpture Forest. With a lifelong passion for land- and community-based practices, Matt will share his knowledge of reciprocal relationships with plant medicines. The event will take place on Wednesday, June 24, from 12 to 1 p.m., with the walk beginning in Fleming College’s Haliburton School of Art + Design Great Hall (297 College Drive, Haliburton). Community members of all ages are welcome to attend.
Both events reflect Fleming College’s ongoing commitment to fostering awareness, understanding, and connection through inclusive, culturally informed experiences. We welcome community members, students, staff, and visitors to attend and engage in these meaningful opportunities for learning, reflection, and connection.
