Fleming College Receives Funding to Study International Labour Market

Published

Peterborough, ON (April 18, 2023) – Fleming College has received funding from the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO) to study the link between the post-secondary academic credentials of international students and the labour market.

The funding for this research project totals $107,211. The work began in March 2023 and will continue to February 2025.

In addition to the funds, Fleming College joined a consortium of organizations which is examining the current situation facing international education in Ontario.

This group includes Higher Education Strategy Associates, the Canadian Bureau for International Education, the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation and the University of Toronto.

The consortium is working to address several key issues:

• How can institutions, communities, and government support quality international education in Ontario while also focusing on accountability and sustainability?
• How can government and institutions support international students as they transition from post-secondary education to the labour market?

Fleming College will help answer these questions by using a case-based approach and working with community partners to address the growing impact international students and graduates have on the local economies and labour markets in communities across Ontario.

Fleming’s labour market researchers will help inform the HEQCO consortium about the relationship between current academic programming and international student employment and how well that employment aligns with the programs students took. This information can be used to map the link between academic credentials and the labour market.

HEQCO is an independent agency of the Government of Ontario that conducts research and provides evidence-based recommendations to government to improve the accessibility, quality and accountability of Ontario’s publicly assisted colleges and universities.
