Fleming College Introduces Lacrosse Sixes Program, Celebrating the Game and Indigenous Learning
(Peterborough, ON) – (June 19, 2026) – Fleming College is proud to announce the addition of Lacrosse Sixes to its athletics program, marking an exciting new chapter for Phoenix athletics while creating meaningful opportunities for students to engage with and learn about Indigenous cultures, traditions, and history.
The introduction of Lacrosse Sixes this fall reflects the College’s commitment to reconciliation, Indigenous learning and creating opportunities for students to experience one of Canada’s national sports.
Called the Creator’s game, the lacrosse game as we know it today was first created by the Haudenosaunee people and was a sacred activity used to give thanks to the Creator, and recognized as a form of medicine or used to resolve conflict. Lacrosse Sixes is a fast-paced, dynamic version of the sport that emphasizes speed, skill and teamwork while remaining connected to the rich traditions and teachings that have shaped the game for generations.
Joanne Spicer, Fleming’s Associate Vice-President, Student Experience, says the new athletics program aligns with the community’s history and tradition of lacrosse and opens another door for local players seeking a way to continue to play at a competitive level while gaining a post-secondary education.
“We look forward to partnering with the lacrosse clubs in the area and working together to add another dimension to the already rich legacy of lacrosse in this community,” Spicer says. “Athletics play an important role in building community, leadership and personal growth. This program not only expands opportunities for our student-athletes but also creates pathways for cultural learning and understanding.”
In its first season, the newly created Fleming Phoenix lacrosse team will play in tournaments across the province against other post-secondary teams.
“The introduction of the lacrosse sixes athletic program will provide our students with even more chances to gain a greater knowledge and understanding of the perspectives, and experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada,” says Clorise Taylor, Manager of Indigenous Student Services, Fleming College.
Leading the Fleming Phoenix Lacrosse Sixes team in their first season will be newly hired head coach Dustin Dunn. Dunn currently holds the position as National Development Program Coordinator for Lacrosse Canada, as well as being a coach for the Ontario Lacrosse Association and Brock University. Dunn was a three-time CULFA All Canadian midfielder and a two-time Brock University MVP between 2009-2012, helping the program capture the Baggataway Cup in 2009. Dunn is also a former professional player, having played for both the Toronto Rock and the Buffalo Bandits.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dustin to the Phoenix family,” says Greg Jefford, Director, Student Experience and Athletics, Fleming College. “Dustin’s experience, leadership and passion make him the ideal person to build this program from the ground up. His knowledge of the game, combined with his commitment to athlete development and community engagement, will help create an outstanding experience for our student-athletes.”
The launch of Lacrosse Sixes at Fleming was made possible through an investment by Fleming’s Student Administrative Council (SAC) toward the development of new sports programs. This was highlighted at Fleming’s Second Annual Lacrosse Day: The Creator’s game on June 17, led by Indigenous Student Services. The event also included the introduction of an Indigenous digital image of the Fleming Phoenix, designed by Indigenous artist Jared Tait.
The Indigenous image of the Phoenix will be featured at future athletic events including on October 25 when Fleming hosts its first home tournament at Fleming Phoenix Field. Details will be provided closer to the event.
