Fleming College

Fleming College students will be heading back to the classroom this week with orientation and regular full-time classes starting on Sept. 4.

The college will welcome about 6,000 students this year to all of its campus locations in Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton and Cobourg. Fleming College’s fall semester enrolment is expected to be in-line with projections following a record summer semester that saw more than 1,000 students attending from May to August. 

At the Sutherland Campus, work is continuing on the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre (KTTC), which is scheduled to open in September 2014 and will house Fleming’s trades and technology programs.

Also at the Sutherland Campus, the new Fleming Sport Complex will open this fall. The two artificial sports fields, change rooms and clubhouse are a joint partnership between Fleming’s Student Administrative Council, the college, community sports groups and the City of Peterborough.

Fleming students play an important role in the economic and social development of our communities. Students provide volunteer services at many community events and work with numerous businesses and community partners on placements as interns or co-op students. In addition to direct investment in the Fleming Sports Complex, students are a significant economic driver through expenditures in accommodation, food, and other living expenses in all of our communities.

The college is also one of the region’s largest employers. A full complement of faculty and staff has returned to teach and support students in over 100 programs this fall. A recent employee survey indicated that 92% of respondents saw their work as meaningful and “not just a job,” 89% take advantage of opportunities to enhance their skills, and 80% would recommend Fleming as an employer to a friend. Overall results improved significantly from the prior survey. 

New programs launching this September include post-graduate programs Aquaculture, Applied and Community-Based Research (Frost Campus), and Therapeutic Recreation (Sutherland Campus). A Developmental Services Worker diploma program and Human Services Foundation certificate program will be offered at the Sutherland Campus while the Frost Campus will offer a certificate in Outdoor and Adventure Education as well as the new Urban Forestry Technician Co-op diploma/degree program. Students taking this program spend two years at Fleming followed by two years at the University of New Brunswick. Graduates receive an Urban Forestry Technician diploma as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry (Urban Forestry Emphasis).
