Early Childhood Education graduate to receive Alumnus of Distinction Award
Peterborough ON – (June 4, 2015) – Fleming College is pleased to announce that Lorrie Baird, an Early Childhood Education graduate from the Class of 1985, is the recipient of the 2015 Alumnus of Distinction Award.
This prestigious award is annually given to an alumnus who attains outstanding career success and professional achievement.
Lorrie is a champion in the early learning field. With more than 30 years of experience, she has engaged young children, their families and early learning professionals in her positions as a classroom educator, director, college faculty, curriculum consultant, and now the associate executive director with Compass Early Learning and Care in Peterborough (formerly known as Kawartha Child Care Services).
Throughout her remarkable career, Lorrie has immersed herself in strengthening her understanding of the early learning process. She has authored articles in both Child Care Exchange and Young Children. As a pedagogical leader and professional learning facilitator, she believes in engaging educators in reflective practice and ensuring that the work in adult learning parallels with that of fostering children.
As Lorrie transformed how learning is encouraged in early learning programs, the Ministry of Education (MOE) discovered her work in reflective practice. It admired the innovative teaching and learning methods offered to children, families and educators in KCCS centres and began to draw on Lorrie’s resourcefulness.
In 2013, the MOE asked her to contribute as an author to its “Think, Feel, Act, Lessons on Research for Young Children” document. This document is a strong support to Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years, “How Does Learning Happen?”
Lorrie was among the team nominated for the 2014 Prix Realm award that recognizes excellence and achievement in the Learning Ministries. She is also a 2014 Fleming College Premier’s Awards—Community Services nominee for outstanding college graduates.
Fleming College President Dr. Tony Tilly will present the 2015 Alumna of Distinction Award to Lorrie Baird during the School of Justice and Community Development convocation ceremony at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 11 in Peterborough, Ontario.
The community is invited to watch the award presentation live online at www.flemingcollege.ca/alumni-relations.
