Celebrating Convocation at Sutherland Campus

Published

Fleming College’s Sutherland Campus will celebrate the graduating class of 2014 at six convocation ceremonies between Tuesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 12. More than 2,450 students will graduate from five schools over the three days. Two ceremonies will take place each day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre on Brealey Drive. Here is the full schedule

For those that can’t attend, convocation will be live streamed by clicking the link found here: http://flemingcollege.ca/alumni-relations. The live stream service is provided by the Advancement and Alumni Relations Office and is sponsored by Nexicom.

Convocation Highlights:

Six members of the Chisasibi Cree Nation, located on James Bay in Quebec, will graduate from the Aboriginal Heritage Interpretation program on Thursday, June 12 at the 10 a.m. ceremony. The graduates will be accompanied at convocation by four Elders from the community.

Aboriginal Heritage Interpretation is a specially-designed diploma program, tailored for the students from Chisasibi. Since 2008, the students have been splitting their time between courses in their communities and courses offered through Fleming. The approaches to teaching and learning within the program are based on traditional Cree ways of transmitting knowledge, and provide a balance between the teaching and knowledge of Cree community members and Elders, and the methodologies of museum work and practice.

Chisasibi, a community of 4,000, was relocated in the early 1980s due to flooding associated with the James Bay power project. All of their traditional lands and burial grounds were flooded and the relocation caused serious upheaval in the community.

The Chisasibi Heritage and Cultural Centre opened recently to educate community members about heritage interpretation, and to try to heal the community’s past. At the same time the Centre will preserve Chisasibi’s rich cultural heritage for future generations. All six graduates are currently employed with the Centre.

The College will also recognize two faculty members with teaching awards during Convocation. The awards honour the faculty who best demonstrate a consistent commitment to student success and learning, inspire students to maximize success, and contribute to a positive culture. The award recipients are:

  • Roberta Legacy will receive the Charles E. Pascal Award for Excellence in Teaching on Wednesday, June 11 at the 2 p.m. ceremony. Roberta has taught at Fleming for more than 25 years, and currently teaches in the Business area. Roberta received multiple nominations, all of which spoke of her integrity, dedication, availability to students and colleagues, and her positive demeanour.
  • Brenda Hill will receive the Vice-President Academic’s Contract Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching on Thursday, June 12 at the 2 p.m. ceremony. Brenda has taught at Fleming since 2005 and was nominated by her students in the Health Information Management program. Her nomination recognized the industry knowledge and experience she brings to the classroom, her patience with students, and her high standards.
