Lindsay ON – (October 2, 2020) – Ingenuity and teamwork will be put to the test in a new challenge course unveiled at The Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes. The new PEAK Low Ropes Course will challenge groups and individuals to work together to accomplish a task or goal and was made possible with funding from the Lindsay Legacy CHEST Fund and a partnership with Fleming College.
The PEAK Low Ropes Course offers 13 elements in total. Different elements allow participants to experience situations that teach different values and each element can teach multiple values such as team building, increasing self-esteem, communication and problem solving.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes collaborated with Fleming College to make this project transpire. This partnership allowed Fleming College Urban Forestry Technician Co-op students to practice technical skills as well as give back to the community. Fleming students cleared invasive tree species, cut back overgrown vegetation and pruned mature trees to create a safer space for children and families in the Low Ropes Course area. The partnership will continue with students developing a management plan for the BGCKL site that will provide important insights into planting and maintenance of the tree canopy.
The City of Kawartha Lakes was also an important partner in helping the Club fully realize the vision for the property as a hub for children, youth and families. Almost $50,000 from the Lindsay Legacy CHEST Fund was contributed to support the move and expansion of the Low Ropes Course including additional safety components given the new realities of COVID-19. The funds also allowed the Club to remove portions of the property’s fence to connect the property to the city trail.
“The Club is excited to provide new learning experiences at the New Low Ropes Course,” says Amy Terrill, Executive Director. “The Course will be utilized by programs for children and youth at the club and will be available for facilitated corporate or small group sessions.”

About Boys & Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes
Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes is one of the area’s largest and most diverse child and youth serving organizations. Established in 1970, the Club provides summer camps, before and after school programs, early learning, licensed childcare, child and youth counselling, infant development, sports, recreation and adventure programs in ten local communities. Clubs currently serve over 8,000 children, youth and their families through services that foster self-esteem, build skills and develop character. Most importantly, Clubs remove financial barriers to participation by keeping program costs affordable and subsidizing all of its programs for families who can’t afford to pay. At our Clubs, children and youth learn to become valuable members of their communities.
