With a goal to raise awareness of the human suffering occurring in Darfur in Africa, as well as raise funds to help the victims, a group of about 20 Fleming College students will embark on a four-day trek from Peterborough to Toronto from April 27 to 30.Following in the footsteps of students at MacEwan College in Alberta, the Fleming students have signed on to be the first college in Ontario to join this cause. The students, starting out from Fleming College, will walk more than 30 km a day, ending in Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square on April 30.The tragedy and terror have been occurring in Darfur since 2003, when opposing forces came into conflict over power and resources. As of September 2007, more than 2.2 million people have been displaced from their homes, more than 200,000 have died, thousands of women have been raped, and hundreds of villages have been destroyed. This suffering still continues today. In the summer of 2007 the UN passed an agreement to have an international force of 26,000 peacekeepers stationed in Darfur, beginning January 2008.For more information on what has been labelled the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis”, by Amnesty International please visit www.savedarfur.org.We are urging our government to take a stand and press for quicker action to be taken.“Enduring only a small fraction of the immense suffering the people of Darfur experience everyday, we will walk for peace, we will walk for global action, and we will walk for the people of Darfur.” (www.savedarfur.org)If interested in making a donation to support this cause please contact Leigh Bakalar at lbakalar@flemingc.on.ca or contact the Fleming College Student Administrative Council at (705) 743-4460. All proceeds will be donated to War Child Canada a registered charity that provides humanitarian assistance to children affected by war.- 30 –
