Wilfred & Mary Margaret Quigley Memorial Bursary for Personal Support Worker

Wilf Quigley was born in Toronto in 1927 the middle child of seven. He went on to have seven kids of his own with the love of his life, Mary Margaret Plunkett. Wilf spent many years at Canada Post working his way up to Post Master of Port Hope in 1973. He & Mary were avid campers and they crisscrossed Canada every summer with the kids in tow. Any time not at work or with the kids was spent volunteering in the community, whether through the Church, Scouting, or the Rotary Club. He was a prankster and a practical joker with a twinkle in his eye and a song in his heart.

In their later years, Wilf & Mary came to rely upon Personal Support Workers for help around the house. After Mary died in 2007, Wilf decided to move into retirement living and then later into assisted living at Empire Crossing in Port Hope. He was always treated with dignity & respect. The PSWs and nursing staff were superb. But for Wilf, the best parts of every week were his shower nights. Just before bedtime with the help of his favorite PSWs. They were so kind, caring & thoughtful.

Wilf died on March 20, 2020, at the ripe old age of 92 after a long life well-lived.

This bursary was established to provide financial assistance to a full-time PSW student residing in Port Hope. A small token of appreciation for the PSWs that came before you…for care above & beyond, for nurturing that practical joker and nourishing his endearing twinkle.

The world needs more nurturing & nourishment. The world needs more PSWs."

Awarded to a full-time Student in the PSW Program from Port Hope, in good academic standing, who demonstrates compassion & dedication in their interactions with Patients, Staff and, Peers.
