Watercolour - Fall in Haliburton

Paint:

Please purchase tubes of artist-quality watercolours only. (DaVinci, Winsor Newton, Daniel Smith, Holbein, etc.). Do not feel you must have all of the colours listed. Warm and cool versions of primary colours along with Burnt Sienna and Sap Green are requested (marked with an *) Fill your palette with the colours and let them set for a few days before the start of the workshop.

• Permanent Rose, Quinacridone Rose - cool*
• Ultramarine Blue - warm*
• Cobalt Blue - mid *
• Cerulean Blue Genuine - cool*

• Raw Sienna*
• Burnt Sienna*
• Phthalo Blue
• Perylene Green
• Leaf Green (can be mixed with Aureolin and Phthalo)
• Quinacridone Gold (great for fall colours)
• Quinacridone Burnt Orange (great for fall colours)
• Winsor (Dioxazine Violet (PV23)

Palette:

Plastic palette with deep wells and a lid (Robert Wood, Stephen Quiller, etc.)

Brushes:

Watercolour brushes are short-handled. Good synthetic brushes are fine.

• 1" synthetic flat wash brush
• One No. 3-6 Script or Rigger brush - long, thin bristles
• One or Two Pointed Rounds: Small: No. 2, 4, or 6,
• One or Two Pointed Rounds: Medium: Size 8, 10, 12, 14
• 1" Escoda flat hogs hair (Series No. 8247) or similar

Paper:

• 140 lb. cold press sheets 22" x 30" (100% cotton fibre, acid-free). Arches brand is highly recommended.
• (One sheet may be cut into 2 quarters 11" x 15" and 4 eighths 7.5" x 11") A few scraps for tests.

Other:

• Painting boards corrugated plastic 16" x 20" and 9" x 12"
• 2 water containers
• Paper towels, Kleenex
• Masking tape 1/2 to 3/4"
• Salt (small amount of table and coarse type)
• Toothbrush (old but clean!)
• Spray Bottle (spritzer type with adjustable spray, not mister)
• Masking fluid optional
• Rubber Cement Pickup optional (for removal of masking fluid)

Mandatory Studio Safety Practices

Your health and safety are our priorities. Our studio environments can have a number of objects, tools and chemicals that require personal protective equipment (PPE) or other considerations for your well-being. All persons (including faculty, staff and students) are asked to observe the following while in the shops and studios:

• Wear sturdy and appropriate shoes such as sneakers, closed leather shoes or work boots. Open-toed shoes, flip-flops or high heels are not allowed
• No long, dangling clothing or accessories (scarves, flowing sleeves, chains, long necklaces, etc).
• Long hair must be tied back
• No bare skin if exposure to chemicals or tools/machinery is likely
• Appropriate PPE is mandatory when operating tools and equipment within the studios.
• Please consult with the faculty or studio technician to determine the appropriate PPE required for specific machines and studio processes.

Fit tests are required for courses requiring a respirator, as noted on your material list. Arrangements will be made on-site. As these are mandatory safety practices, we will follow up directly with students who may have oversighted the above. Individuals may be asked to address any concerns before continuing to work in the studio. Be sure to buy appropriate, good-quality safety articles and equipment, i.e. safety boots, protective eyewear, hearing protection, work gloves, x-acto knives, etc. - ask your supplier for advice.
