16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

Fleming College is proud to stand in solidarity with individuals and organizations around the world by participating in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This international campaign runs from November 25 to December 10, and aims to raise awareness, inspire action, and promote meaningful change.

We’re kicking off 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence 2024 by coming together to ACT NOW. If you witness a potentially harmful situation unfolding, don't be a bystander! Intervene as safely as possible by distracting the perpetrator, delegating others to help out, documenting the situation, delaying the harm, and being direct about ending sexual violence. Don’t forget to wear purple today in support of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 💜.

Myth: International students can be deported if they report sexual violence.

Fact: This is a lie aimed at intimidating you into silence. Reports are confidential. If you file a formal report with the police or the College as the person harmed by sexual or gender-based violence, neither immigration nor your home country will know. Fleming College will never share your personal information with immigration, your family, teachers, or classmates without your consent. We believe you, we’re here to listen!

Just because you consent once does not mean you have consented for all time to come. Section 278 of the Criminal Code specifies that a spouse may be charged with sexual assault - your spouse or partner has the right to say ‘no’! (OHCHR.org 2020) Forced marriage, where pressure or abuse is used to ‘force’ one or both people to marry against their will, is also a form of gender-based violence. How do people in your life talk about violence in relationships? How do their views affect your decisions? Our experiences of gender-based violence are shaped by colonialism, sexism, ableism, and economic marginalization, among many other social structures that create inequality.
