New co-op component for Earth Resources Technician program

Published

Fleming College has added a new geology co-operative work term to its Earth Resources Technician program, offered at the Frost Campus in Lindsay.

The co-op work term will add many valuable hours of employer training to the Earth Resources Technician program. Students starting the program in September 2011 will be the first class to participate in this new co-op work term.

Fleming College has long focused on tailoring programs to ensure interest from prospective students, particularly in a field such as earth resources where careers are readily available. In this spirit college faculty members, with the support and input of the industry advisory committee for the Earth Resources Technician program, formulated the new co-op component to attract more students and open more doors to the various careers in applied geology.

“The earth resource industries – including government agencies and firms involved in civil, geotechnical, geo-environmental, and mineral science and engineering – see merit in hiring students during the prime field work season. Successful applicants will work in an applied geology job as a required part of their education,” said Program Coordinator Brian Gerry.

“We are committed to our graduates’ success. The Co-op work term will strengthen the students’ hands-on and theoretical basis for a career. Furthermore, graduates will have demonstrated that industry has assessed their skills and work ethic, in addition to accomplishing the other outcomes expected of an Earth Resource Technician graduate.”
