Fleming College students will present donation in memory of faculty member Linda Elias

Published

Peterborough, ON – March 19, 2012 – Fleming College Health Information Management (HIM) students will be donating a $5, 000 cheque to the Oshawa Hospital Foundation for the Cancer Centre’s Palliative Care Unit on Wednesday, March 21, 2012. The cheque will be in memory of faculty member Linda Elias, who was treated at the centre before she sadly passed away eight weeks after her cancer diagnosis was made.

At 10 a.m. in room 5907 of the Sutherland campus, HIM students will present the cheque to Ashley MacInnis, Manager of Events at the Oshawa Hospital Foundation. HIM students raised the money by selling a cookbook they titled “Our Favourite Recipes,” and fondly refer to as “The Cookbook for Cancer Project,” after Elias.

“Linda was touched that this project was being done in her honour, and she chose where she wanted this money earmarked to,” said Paula Weisflock, Coordinator of the Health Information Management program. “Linda chose the Palliative Care Unit at the Cancer Centre because her oncologist, Dr. Orit Freedman, and the entire Durham Region Palliative Care team provided her with professional and compassionate care.”

Weisflock said that Elias contributed some of her own favourite recipes, including “Linda’s Favourite Chicken Thighs” and “Mom’s Banana Bread,” before she passed away on November 5, 2011, three weeks before the book was published.

The creation and sale of “Our Favourite Recipes” was part of a Service Learning Project, where HIM students volunteer to give back to the community. The cookbook, which the students sold for $10 per copy, is a compilation of recipes and tips submitted by Fleming students, faculty and alumni. Besides submitting content, many members of the Fleming community also assisted with the production and sale of the cookbook to ensure its success.
