On a night to recognize business excellence in the community, Fleming College Accounting student Margaret Bowen received the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce’s Student Business Leadership Bursary.

The Chamber awarded leaders and innovators in local business and community service organizations at the 2013 Peterborough Business Excellence Awards on Oct. 18.

Margaret received a $1,000 bursary, which was established on behalf of the Chamber as a way to recognize exceptional business leadership potential in a postsecondary student.

Margaret, in the third year of the Business Administration – Accounting program, maintains a 3.9 GPA, is the mother of a three-year-old daughter, and aspires to attend the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Bachelor of Commerce program next year.

A member of the Program Advisory Committee for the Accounting program, Margaret also serves as a student representative for the School of Justice and Business Studies. She volunteers for, and organizes, the Community Tax Return Clinic at Fleming which provides free tax service to low income individuals and families. As well, Margaret serves as a note taker for multiple courses, and is Treasurer on the Board of Directors at Sunshine Heights Daycare in Port Hope.

The College also participated in the Business Excellence Awards as a sponsor of the Non-Profit Award, in recognition of a not-for-profit organization that demonstrates excellence in a number of areas such as strategic planning and volunteer management. The YWCA of Peterborough Haliburton was this year’s recipient.

“Fleming College greatly values the close ties it shares with local business and community services groups. The success of our students depends, in large part, on the strength of these relationships. Learning opportunities beyond the campus provide students with a richer overall educational experience and these partnerships allow our students to make their own valuable connections, setting them up for long-term success,” said Drew Van Parys, Fleming’s Director of Marketing.
