Fleming’s Moveable Feast raises funds for students and the community
On Monday, Oct. 5 the Frost Campus Friends Committee hosted “Fleming’s Moveable Feast,” a 100-mile dining experience.
One hundred guests were treated to an array of appetizers, soups and salads. All ingredients were locally sourced with 50% of the ingredients coming from the Sustainable Agriculture program’s on-site gardens. Students were on hand at the event to talk about the program and their recent Co-op experiences. A live and silent auction which included painted tables by local artists and other items also took place.
The event was part of the “Feastable” series focused on local dining in support of United Way City of Kawartha Lakes and grossed $6,650. All net proceeds were split between United Way City of Kawartha Lakes and the Fleming College bursary program at the Frost campus.
“United Way City of Kawartha Lakes understands the importance of assisting students with their goals for educational pursuits. It is important also to recognize their investment in their community through volunteering. Bursary programs are important and help students who might otherwise not be able to have the funds required to study. This event was an opportunity for both Fleming College and United Way to raise awareness and funds to continue the support of students,” said United Way City of Kawartha Lakes Executive Director, Penny Barton-Dyke.
Since 2002, United Way City of Kawartha Lakes has awarded just over $60,000 in bursaries to high school graduates who have been nominated by their schools in recognition of their volunteerism and leadership in their communities. These bursaries were made possible by donors who left gifts in their wills for United Way.
Through over 30 donor-sponsored bursaries, the Frost campus will award approximately $18,000 this academic year to current students in financial need.
“Last year I approached the United Way and the Olympia Restaurant and asked them to consider expanding the very popular ‘100 mile’ dinner and they were eager to have Fleming College join as a partner. This paved the way for the College to support the United Way and to raise money for much needed student support. We are very fortunate to have such amazing community partners and look forward to hosting this event for many years,” said Linda Skilton, the Principal of the Frost Campus in Lindsay.
Planning has already begun for the 2016 event.
