Agnes Assinger Memorial Student Bursary - Ent

Agnes Assinger was born in a small, rural village in Austria in 1905. When she was 16 years old she left home to attend a school for training in food preparation and service. As part of her training she apprenticed in restaurants in Udine and Tarvis in Italy and in Vienna, Austria.

In 1929 she immigrated to Canada with her husband just in time for the Great Depression. The skills she had learned served her well and she was able to find work with wealthy families as cook and housekeeper until she and her husband bought their own home in the early 1940s. She still helped her former employees when they had large dinner parties.

At the same time she raised her daughter and looked after her own rooming house, which she kept until she died in 1993 at the age of 88. Agnes was a wonderful cook, and her unrealized dream was to have a littler restaurant of her own where she could do what she loved most- cook for people who loved good food.

Donald and Robert Gray Bursary

This fund was established by the Donor in 2014 to assist Sir Sandford Fleming College students. This bursary has been established in memory of two brothers, Don and Bob Gray. Both men were caring family men whose professions were in line with the attributes and learning outcomes of the Earth Resource program.

Don began his career as a Geography grad from Western University; he initially drew maps in Ottawa and did field work in Newfoundland. He went on to a long service teaching career as an elementary school teacher and principal in London Ontario. His love of the outdoors and exploring the back woods of Killarney Provincial Park was a lifelong passion. He raised three boys; of which Mark Gray, the Donor, is the centre.

Bob graduated from the University of Toronto and had an exciting career in the minerals exploration field. He worked in the field in northern Ontario for years and then went on to higher posts with various exploration companies. One role took him as far away as Perth, Australia, where he resided for a number of years. He lived in Toronto for the latter portion of his life, with Janet his wife, and continued to do consulting work for various firms. His love of gems and minerals was life long and lasting.

This gift is offered in hopes that it assists a Fleming College Resource Technician student in making it through their post-secondary education and on to a career of exploration and adventure.

The eligible student must be a co-op student in the Earth Resource Technician program who demonstrates financial need.

Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament Bursary

This fund was established by the Donor in 2008 to mark the 50th anniversary of The Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament and to recognize student athletics at Fleming College. The Tournament began in 1958-59 as a one day, eight team affair for Pee Wees. With the introduction of play-downs for this group by the OMHA, the tournament was changed to Novice level, and eventually adopted the name "Atom" in 1974 as a result of OMHA changes to age groupings. For the first 11 years, the tournament was held in mid-March under the chairman Neil Clark. In the fall of 1969, a group headed by Jack Guerin, Lloyd Hardy, Dan Dorsett and Howie Eastman approached the League Executive with a proposal to change the Tournament to a two day 16 team event. The tournament has continued to grow over the years and currently averages 100 Atom teams each year. Tournament proceeds have lowered the costs of hockey for thousands of local minors hockey players, and in addition have assisted dozens of local/national charities and capital projects such as the Evinrude Centre, Kinsman Civic Centre and the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. All will attest to our motto: "Not just a hockey tournament...It's a community affair".
