NSERC funding for Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment
Fleming College’s Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT) will receive a $150,000 grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) it was announced last week.
The grant will go toward purchasing research equipment for the Centre to enhance the college’s applied research capacity.
“This funding will allow the CAWT to purchase advanced analytical water testing equipment including an automated chemistry analyzer, ion chromatograph, and a new fume hood. This equipment will significantly expand the capacity of our lab to analyze water samples,” said Dr. Brent Wootton, senior scientist and director of the CAWT.
The CAWT specializes in applied research on alternative, innovative, and emerging wastewater treatment technologies with emphasis on cold and temperate climates and on low cost, high efficiency technologies including biological treatment systems, phytotechnology, and other environmentally sound technologies.
A total of 35 colleges will share more than $8 million in NSERC’s College and Community Innovation Program’s (CCI) Applied Research Tools and Instruments (ARTI) Grants. The grants will support 79 research projects.
“These CCI Program – ARTI Grants will result in innovation at the community level and entice companies to collaborate with colleges across the country,” said Suzanne Fortier, President of NSERC, which administers the CCI Program. “When companies and colleges have access to the very best resources, everyone benefits. New jobs are created, industry expands and the community prospers.”
NSERC is a federal agency that helps make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for all Canadians. The agency supports some 30,000 postsecondary students and postdoctoral fellows in their advanced studies. NSERC promotes discovery by funding more than 12,000 professors every year and fosters innovation by encouraging more than 1,500 Canadian companies to participate and invest in postsecondary research projects.
