Culinary student competes at National Skills Competition

Published

Fleming College‘s Andrew Tye earned a fifth place finish when he competed at the 2011 National Skills Competition, June 1-4.

Andrew’s hard work and professionalism carried him through the competition, which was extremely challenging. He was competing with the best students from across Canada at the event, which took place in Quebec City.

“The days at the competition were long and tiring, but it was well worth it. By the end I thought the skills I developed during my education and training were showcased in the plates that I presented to the judges,” said Andrew.

Andrew worked very hard over the course of the two day competition. He represented himself, Fleming College, and Team Ontario with a high standard of excellence and professionalism.  His mentoring abilities with Solomon Mason, Team Ontario’s Secondary Cook contestant, helped Solomon to secure a Silver Medal in the secondary contest.

“The event itself was a real eye opener for Andrew; it was great to witness the quality and diversity of trades within Canada. Andrew represented Fleming College and Team Ontario with his work ethic and professional attitude,” said Steve Benns, Andrew’s advisor for the competition.

Thanks go to Dr. Jim Drennan, Dean of the School of Business, Computing and Hospitality, for his support. Special thanks go to the corporate sponsors who helped make Andrew’s trip a reality:

• Patricia Thompson from King Cole Ducks,
• Peter Huebner from Canada Cutlery
• Steve Christie from Sysco Foodservices of Central Ontario
• Jetan Patel from Peterborough Wholesalers

Thank you to all the staff, students, friends and family who supported Andrew through a Fundraising dinner on Wednesday, May 25, 2011. Guests were treated to Andrew’s menu that he presented at the competition.  All who attended said that Andrew’s menu was great and his presentation was exceptional.

“Congratulations to Andrew for competing at the 2011 National Skills Competition. Your efforts make us all proud,” said Wayne Bonner, Academic Lead, School of Business, Computing and Hospitality.

Andrew’s hard work did not stop at the competition as he is already back to work at 38 Degrees with Chefs Will Wood-Gates and Evan Podd. Fleming College’s Culinary department thanks these great area chefs who have helped develop Andrew into the skilled cook he is today.

In the last four years at the Ontario Skills Competition, Fleming culinary students have won four gold medals as well as several silver and bronze medals. Andrew Tye, who won gold this year, is the son of recently retired Fleming faculty member Al Tye.
