Awards to be handed out at Fleming College convocation

Fleming College will recognize students, faculty and members of the public through various awards to be handed out at upcoming convocation ceremonies in Lindsay and Peterborough. More than 3,200 students will graduate from ceremonies held at both campuses over the next week.

Frost Campus – June 3 at 2 p.m., Lindsay Recreation Complex

• Faculty member Josh Feltham will receive the Vice-President Academic’s Contract Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. Mr. Feltham teaches in the Ecosystem Management program. He makes active efforts to communicate with, and be available to students. Mr. Feltham is described as radiating support and encouragement with nothing but optimism.

• Community member George Skerratt will receive the Kawartha Lakes/Haliburton Fellowship in Applied Education. Mr. Skerratt is a retired paramedic and a very active community volunteer. He often takes on a leadership role in many community activities for the benefit of countless individuals in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

• Carolyn Knapper will receive the Vice President Academic Award which recognizes outstanding academic success and significant contribution to the college community. Ms. Knapper is graduating from the Fish and Wildlife Technician program. With a passion for protecting the environment, Ms. Knapper has led her fellow students in the Frost Initiative for the last two years. Her efforts have greatly furthered sustainability at Frost Campus and include awareness campaigns, campus sustainability assessments and assistance in drafting the proposal to ban the sale of bottled water at Frost.

Sutherland Campus – June 7-9, Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre

• Faculty member Peter Malkovsky will receive the Charles E. Pascal Award for Excellence in Teaching. Mr. Malkovsky teaches in the School of Business, Computing and Hospitality. He goes out of his way to ensure his students have the resources they need to succeed and his teaching style makes his classes interesting and unique. Mr. Malkovsky is often viewed as a mentor by students and he always makes himself available outside of the classroom. He will receive his award on Wednesday, June 8 at 2 p.m.

• Phil White, Dominion Sculptor of Canada, will receive the Alumnus of Distinction Award. Mr. White will receive his award on Tuesday, June 7 at 10 a.m.

• Drew Monkman will receive the Peterborough/Cobourg Fellowship in Applied Education. Mr. Monkman is a teacher, naturalist, author and newspaper columnist. His passion for the natural world is infused in all he does including his classroom teaching and volunteer work. Mr. Monkman will receive his award on Thursday, June 9 at 2 p.m.
