New Co-op options at Fleming College’s Frost Campus
Fleming College’s School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences (SENRS) is growing its Co-operative Education Program, which will provide students with improved access to paid, real-world work experiences before they graduate.
Beginning in September 2016, Fish and Wildlife Technician and Forestry Technician will include optional Co-op opportunities for students while Resource Mapping Technician and Aquaculture, a graduate certificate program, will add mandatory Co-ops.
Co-ops are paid placements that must make up one-third of a program’s total hours. Often they are completed during the summer semester, May to August. Over the past eight years, SENRS has increased the number of Co-op programs from zero to 12. More than 185 students completed Co-op programs in summer 2015.
The following SENRS programs currently have Co-op:
- Advanced Water Systems Operations and Management
- Arboriculture
- Earth Resources Technician
- Electrical Power Generation Technician
- Environmental Technician
- Heavy Equipment Techniques
- Sustainable Agriculture
- Urban Forestry Technician
“Fleming’s SENRS alumni have a stellar reputation – we have more graduates working in the environmental and natural resources fields than any other college in Canada,” said Linda Skilton, Dean of SENRS and Principal of the Frost Campus. “Providing more opportunities for our students to work in the field – and get paid for it – before they graduate gives them an even greater advantage when they leave Fleming to begin their careers.”
Co-op placements are beneficial as they integrate students’ academic studies with work experience, providing them with practical, hands-on opportunities to apply knowledge and skills obtained in their program. Employers who hire Co-op students benefit as well, as they can access the Co-operative Education Tax Credit, and claim a rebate of 25-30% of a student’s wage, up to $3,000.
