Mason Homes & Fleming College partner to create wetland at Frost Campus

Published

Mason Homes and Fleming College are teaming up to create a wetland at Frost Campus, which will provide a new home to a variety of native plant and animal species.

The construction of the wetland also offers valuable hands-on learning opportunities for students in programs within the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences. Students in the Heavy Equipment Operator program are currently creating the groundwork for the wetland. Planting and hydro seeding by students from the Ecosystem Management and Fish and Wildlife programs are expected to be completed by Sept. 30 with the wetland fully established by the end of October. Students from the Resources Drilling and Blasting and Forestry programs will also be involved in the project.

“The wetland gives our students the opportunity to work on a real world project,” said Linda Skilton, Dean of the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences and Principal of Frost Campus. “The Heavy Equipment Operator program learning outcomes will be enhanced by students gaining an understanding of the potential environmental impacts related to their work as operators. The wetland will enhance our on-campus learning opportunities and reduce the need to bus students to off-site locations for this applied learning. The wetland will also provide habitat for a variety of species and restore the site to its original state.”

The project, located near the Heavy Equipment Operator fields just south of the Kawartha Trans Canada Trail, includes a north and south pond. Mason Homes is providing funding for the wetland and Niblett Environmental Associates Inc. will conduct environmental monitoring for three years following the completion of the project.
