Haliburton School of Art + Design Opens Biingiden Student Space

Haliburton, ON – (June 30, 2023) – The first dedicated Indigenous space officially opened at the Haliburton School of Art + Design June 30.

Biindigen, meaning “welcome,” or, “come in,” provides space for Indigenous students, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, guests and community to gather, meet with the Indigenous Student Services team, and engage in cultural practices and learning.

The June 30 opening celebration included remarks from Elizabeth Stone, Vice President, Indigenous Knowledge and Relations, Drew Van Parys, Executive Vice President, Corporate Services at Fleming College and representatives from Indigenous Student Services were on hand to celebrate the space’s grand opening.

“We are so proud to be able to offer this space for Indigenous students and community,” said Elizabeth Stone, Vice President Indigenous Knowledge and Relations. “This is a safe space that welcomes everyone, and helps further Fleming’s commitment to Indigenous education.”

The space further acknowledges Fleming’s commitment to the United Nations Declaration of Indigenous Rights, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action.

The Biindigen Student Space will be located at in the main building at HSAD and is open during regular campus hours.
