Frost Campus celebrating Ontario Aquaculture Week

Published

Fleming College’s Frost Campus is celebrating Ontario Aquaculture Week January 25-29 with an internship fair for students in the Aquaculture program.

Members of the Northern Ontario Aquaculture Association (NOAA) will be on campus throughout the week making presentations to students on growth and opportunities in the Aquaculture field as well as interviewing students for internship positions. Cermaq, a global leader in salmon farming with sites in British Columbia, is also flying in the following week for a presentation, meet and greet, and to conduct interviews with aquaculture students.

“This is a huge opportunity for students. The exposure and networking potential for the students and the program by having these companies and experts on site is a big step for their careers as well as the Aquaculture program going forward. Support from our industry is imperative to the long-term success of the Aquaculture program. Such a recruiting effort by the industry is indicative of the high quality students the program is producing and the strong partnerships we are developing,” said Jon Carter, Coordinator of the Aquaculture program.
The presentations from industry experts will include:

  • Meekers Aquaculture – Going Organic
  • Arlen Taylor of Cedar Crest – Fingerling Industry
  • Susan Cole of Cole Munroe – Processing Industry
  • Ben Kanasawe of Buzwah Fisheries – Building a Net-pen Farm
  • Steve Naylor of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs
  • Ben Boogerman of Camp Creek – Second Generation Fish Farming
  • Gord Coles and Kana Upton of Aquacage – Regulation and Biology
  • Jason Hughson of Wabano Fisheries – A Life in Aquaculture
  • Paul Gernon of Cermaq – Aquaculture with Cermaq

Aquaculture is a rapidly growing, in-demand field across Canada. NOAA member Cedar Crest Farms took three Fleming Aquaculture interns in 2015 and ended up hiring all three students.

Aquaculture is an Ontario graduate certificate. New in 2016, the program will contain an eight week paid Co-op (April to June). For more information on Fleming’s program, visit: http://flemingcollege.ca/programs/aquaculture.
