Fleming SAC Transit Referendum

Published

From Fleming Student Administrative Council:

Starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, December 3 through until midnight Friday, December 4, Fleming students will be able to vote on whether or not to implement a Universal Transit Pass. All students currently enrolled in full time programs at Fleming’s Sutherland campus are eligible to vote.

What are Universal Transit Passes?
Common at other college and university campuses, every student pays an annual fee which entitles students to full access to the entire transit system. The fees collected from U-Passes will be used to enhance service and increase bus routes. The fees will also support transportation related upgrades such as additional bike racks, bike repair stations, enhancements to the trail system and e-bike charging stations.

Why Does It Matter?
Currently the transit system is funded by a user-pay system, only those riding the bus pay for it. We know that the current transit service does not meet the needs of students; it is costly and schedules don’t align.

A U-Pass helps fund better transit service. If approved by the student body, the City of Peterborough will begin increasing transit frequency starting in September 2016. In 2017, an additional route will be added to better meet the needs of students.

But it doesn’t just stop at transit service, U-Passes will help fund upgrades to other transportation infrastructure on campus. We know that affordable and accessible transit options reduces car travel and air pollution. Students should have options to cycle and walk to get where they need to go. Which is why some of the funds from the U-Pass fees will help pay for important enhancements to transportation infrastructure on campus.

These proposed changes will make for a healthier, greener Fleming and they will provide more cost effective transportation options.

Who is behind this proposal?
Fleming Student Administrative Council (SAC) represents the voice of the student body and is concerned about the health and safety of Fleming students. The student activity fees that students currently pay fund student lead initiatives that are managed by SAC such as clubs, bursaries and social events. SAC has been working with the City of Peterborough for two years to establish a better transportation network for students. SAC knows that it is important for students to have access to various affordable transportation options to get to class, to work and to be part of the greater community.
