Fleming College partners with Chinese institution to offer student, faculty exchanges
City of Kawartha Lakes ON – (November 3, 2014) – Fleming College is moving forward on its Memorandum of Understanding with China’s Yellow River Conservancy Technical Institute (YRCTI) with a new agreement to offer student and faculty exchanges between the two institutions.
A delegation from Fleming visited YRCTI last week as well as participating in part of the Government of Ontario’s Science and Tech Mission to China, led by Premier Kathleen Wynne.
The two post-secondary institutions have agreed to forge ahead with faculty and student exchanges between YRCTI and Fleming’s Frost Campus, with a commitment to eventually offer joint programming.
The Frost Campus, located in Lindsay, Ont., specializes in Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences programming, involving active, hands-on, outdoor learning. The campus is also home to the Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment, a renowned water and wastewater technology research hub that is supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
YRCTI is located in Kaifeng, China and specializes in water hydraulics and conservancy, surveying and mapping, and mechanical and electrical fields.
The focus of the Fleming-YRTCI partnership will include water, water research, GIS, and the environment. It is expected that students from YRTCI will come to the Frost Campus for one-year exchanges as early as 2016, beginning with an exploratory two-week visit from Yellow River faculty and students in April 2015.
With the support of Colleges and Institutes Canada, Fleming initially signed an MOU with Yellow River Conservancy Technical Institute when YRCTI representatives visited the Frost Campus in summer 2014.
“There are strong synergies in our programming and specializations,” said Linda Skilton, Dean of Fleming’s School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences. “I believe this opportunity is substantial and has the potential to enrich the Frost Campus faculty and student experience in a very meaningful way.”
