Lindsay, ON – March 20, 2012 – Fleming College will celebrate the importance of freshwater during their World Water Day event on Thursday, March 22, 2012. From noon to 1 p.m. in room 250 of the Frost Campus, Fleming will put the spotlight on freshwater with the help of speakers, a documentary, and a MOU signing between the Frost Campus and The Ecologos Institute.

Fleming College’s World Water Day event will include a MOU signing between Frost Campus and The Ecologos Institute, which is a volunteer environmental research and action network registered by the Government of Canada. The MOU signing is related to the collaboration between Frost Campus and Ecologos’ “Water Alive!” program.

The event will feature a few words from Dr. Brent Wootton about Fleming College’s Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT), and words from Frost Initiative Student Leader, Suzanne Spina, and Student Association Director of Ecology and Environment, Curtis Dunnell. Attendees will also watch “Running Dry,” a 20-minute documentary about the water crisis. Before and after the event, there will be a blind taste test of water from different sources.

International World Water Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of freshwater and advocates for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The first World Water Day took place on March 22, 1993, after it was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater, and this year’s theme is “Water and Food Security.”
