Fleming College hosting Sacred Water Circle conference

Seven Generations Ahead: Celebrating Water Solutions

Fleming College will host a free conference that brings together Indigenous knowledge, science, and grassroots organizations all working for the betterment of water.

Seven Generations Ahead: Celebrating Water Solutions will take place on Friday, May 8 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the college’s Sutherland Campus. The conference will showcase new and innovative water solutions being created and applied in the Kawarthas.

The event will feature:

• Grandmother Josephine Mandamin (founder of the Mother Earth Water Walks) and local Elder Shirley Williams (founder of the Kawartha Water Walk).
• A panel discussion with Gord Balch, a research scientist and faculty member with the Center for Alternative Wastewater Treatment, Linda Skilton, Dean of the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences at the Frost Campus of Fleming College, and Alix Taylor, Water Program Manager at GreenUP and Green Communities Canada.
• Two short water documentaries and an introduction to the Sacred Water Circle’s on-line Teaching Turtle.

Registration is now open for the conference, which will take place in Room B3 100 (Whetung Theatre). The event is free and open for all to attend, but registration is required. The conference comes one year after the successful Sacred Water Circle Gathering and is the result of a partnership among the Sacred Water Circle, Fleming College, Nibi Emosaawdamajig (“Those Who Walk for the Water”), GreenUP, Trent University Indigenous Studies, TRACKS, Curve Lake First Nation, and Faith & the Common Good.

The conference is followed by the 6th Annual Water Awareness Walk in the Kawarthas, taking place on Sunday, May 10 and starting at the First People’s House of Learning, Trent University at 6:30 a.m. More information about this event can be found online at sacredwater.ca. Registration for the water walk is not required.
