Fleming College hosting faculty from RJ College in Mumbai

Faculty from Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala (RJ) College in Mumbai, India are spending some time at Fleming College this week as part of an exchange program established through the Canada India Education Council.

The three visiting professors will spend two weeks between Oct. 2 and 16 touring the college’s campuses, classrooms, and communities.

  • Dr. Vijay Kulkarni is Head of the Chemistry Department and has more than 30 years teaching experience. He is a fellow of the International Congress of Chemistry and Environment and has a strong interest in learning about Canada’s education system, evaluation methods, and innovative teaching practices.
  • Dr. Bhushan Arekar is Head of the Political Science Department, with interests in areas such as human rights and health care. He has been sharing information with Fleming College about changes in the Indian education system.
  • Dr. Anagha Kamble is Assistant Professor in the History Department and has completed research on the Indo-American immigrant experience. She looks forward to learning about the Indian community in Canada and sharing Indian culture with the Fleming College community.

Professors Kamble and Arekar will also offer a formal presentation on India, open to all members of the college, including students. An Introduction to the History and Culture of India will take place on Monday, Oct. 15 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Sutherland Campus in room 374.

This visit is being organized under the auspices of the Inclusive College Committee as an objective in this year’s action plan to address diversity, equity, and inclusion. Three Fleming faculty members – Faith Ratchford, Kim Healy and Heather Pollock – visited RJ College in summer 2011. Fleming College is currently home to 200 international students from India.

Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campus locations in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton. Named for famous Canadian inventor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, the college features more than 90 full-time programs in Business and Technology, Continuing Education and Skilled Trades, Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Visual Arts, Education, Health and Wellness, and Law, Justice and Community Services.
