Fleming College has awarded the contract for the construction of the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre to Elite Construction Inc. Fleming’s Board of Governors approved the awarding of the contract during their meeting on June 27, 2012.

“We are excited to award this contract and begin construction on the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre,” said Fleming College President Dr. Tony Tilly. “The KTTC will provide much-needed training space not only for students coming directly from secondary school, but to train and re-train workers for new careers in both traditional and emerging trades and technology fields.”

As the general contractor, Elite Construction Inc., based in Concord, Ont., will be awarding all sub-contractor agreements, which will involve several local contractors. Cremers Brothers Electric Ltd. of Peterborough will be the electrical sub-contractor. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at Fleming College in mid-July, 2012. Completion of the facility is scheduled for April 2014, with classes to begin in September 2014.

“The Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre will establish Peterborough as a leading Ontario and Canadian jurisdiction in training for jobs in the 21st Century,” said Peterborough MPP Jeff Leal. “This Centre is the result of a comprehensive community partnership. President Tony Tilly and the Fleming team have demonstrated outstanding leadership.”

The $36.6 million, 80,000-square-foot trades and technology centre will be located on Fleming’s Sutherland Campus, and will be used to teach and train students from Fleming College, regional secondary schools and regional industry. The facility will feature sustainable shop facilities, smart-wired classrooms, and labs with the newest technology.
