EcoHealth conference at Frost to feature CBC Radio’s Bob McDonald

Published

Fleming College third year Ecosystem Management Technology students, who began their winter semester participating in an environmental conference in Washington, D.C., are completing their semester by hosting their own sustainability conference featuring keynote speaker CBC Radio’s Bob McDonald.

The Food Energy Water: Empowering People, Finding Solutions conference will take place in Lindsay, Ontario, on Saturday, March 19, at Frost Campus. The students’ vision for the conference is to address the issue that by 2050, the global population is expected to grow to nine billion. Focusing on strategies around reducing food waste, enhancing food security, and improving water and energy efficiency, the conference will explore solutions that promote sustainability of food, energy and water resources in the Kawartha Lakes region and beyond.

The students have been planning the conference for the past four months and are excited to confirm that CBC Radio’s Bob McDonald will be the keynote speaker. His speech, entitled “Perspectives on a Planet,” will bring into focus both the challenges that we face as the human population grows, and the opportunities that exist for building a sustainable future.

“Bob McDonald is in high demand. A fixture in broadcasting for more than 30 years, he is currently the host of CBC Radio’s Quirks & Quarks, the award-winning science program that is heard by 500,000 people each week. He is also the author of numerous bestselling books,” said student Evan Barton, conference spokesperson.

Throughout the day, guests can attend workshop sessions on subjects that range from planting sustainable vegetable gardens to green energy strategies to pollinator conservation – all being led by local experts. The EM students are inviting fellow students, City of Kawartha Lakes residents, community groups and local businesses to attend, participate and learn.
