The following news release was issued by the Office of MP Barry Devolin (Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock):

Local MP Barry Devolin on behalf of the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development, today announced $91,821 in funding to the Fleming CREW Employment Centre from the Skills Link program – part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES).

Over a period of 18 weeks, Fleming College in Haliburton will host eight youth overcome barriers to employment by helping them gain the skills, knowledge and experience they need to enter and succeed in the job market.

“Our government’s top priorities are job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity,” said Devolin. “The Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy is helping youth develop the skills and gain the experience they need to get jobs now and prepare for the workforce of tomorrow.”

Participants in the Fleming CREW project will attend workshops that focus on topics such as effective communication and teamwork. The participants will then take part in job placements with local employers to put into practice the knowledge and skills gained during the workshops.

“We are very excited about launching this program in Haliburton!” said Debby Keating, Manager of Employment Programs at Fleming College. “During the month of August, participants will attend a series of workshops to develop employability skills and secure a network of resources to prepare them for a 3 month work experience placement. We look forward to working with local employers interested in providing placement opportunities.”

The Fleming CREW Employment Centre is located at 49 Maple Avenue and provides services to job seekers and employers in Haliburton County. They can be reached at 705 457-2020.

With an annual budget of more than $300 million, YES helps youth, particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career information, develop employment skills, find jobs and stay employed. YES includes the Skills Link and Career Focus programs and the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, which creates thousands of job opportunities for students every summer.
