MEDIA RELEASE FROM CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES:

KAWARTHA LAKES – At the April 19 Council meeting, City of Kawartha Lakes Council renewed its long-standing commitment to collaboration between the City and Fleming College.

The two parties signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that expands the scope of the partnership and reflects the strategic synergies between the City of Kawartha Lakes and Fleming College.

The City and College have enjoyed a longstanding and active partnership including student employment within various City departments, City staff have been student and program advisors for the College, several research and pilot projects have been hosted by the City, and both parties have benefitted from the sharing of assets, equipment and facilities.

Fleming College is a key strategic partner to advance the City of Kawartha Lakes’ goal to foster a healthy environment by protecting and enhancing water quality. Two pilot projects are set to begin at Lindsay’s Water Pollution Control Plant to test innovative waste water quality improvement technologies developed by Noble Purification Inc. and H2Flow Inc. With the involvement of partners Fleming College, the Centre of Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT) and the Ontario Clean Water Agency, this collaboration allows the pilot to be fulfiled within a municipal infrastructure.

Mayor Andy Letham comments, “We greatly value our relationship with Fleming College. The new MOU recognizes the significant social, economic and environmental contribution that the College, its students and faculty bring to our municipality. We look forward to many more joint strategic initiatives in the future.”

In addition to advancing shared environmental goals, Fleming College is an economic driver for the community. An international leader in environmental programming, the Frost Campus attracts more than 1,700 full time students annually and employs more than 300 full and part-time staff. Students from across the province and around the world come to the campus to take advantage of its unique programs in Kawartha Lakes.

“We are proud to be part of this great community,” says Linda Skilton, Principal of Frost Campus and Dean of the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences. “Moving forward, we see many opportunities at Fleming’s Frost Campus that align with the goals of the municipality. We are excited to further develop our partnership with Kawartha Lakes – to the benefit of not only our students, but also to the community as a whole.”
