Alumnus Of Distinction Award Recipient Celebrated for Perseverance

Peterborough, ON – (June 10, 2022) – Fleming College is pleased to announce that Tyler Scott, a Co-op Diploma Apprenticeship, Culinary graduate from the class of 2011, is the recipient of the 2022 Alumnus of Distinction Award. This prestigious award is presented to an alumnus who attains outstanding career success and professional achievement.

Scott was the owner and executive chef of Rare Restaurant located in Peterborough, Ontario. In a time where the COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the restaurant industry, Tyler and his team at Rare worked hard to pivot through various closures.

In April 2022, Tyler and his wife Kassy, announced the news of an exciting new chapter and will be launching Rare Escape: Outdoor Guided Culinary Experiences. The pair have a passion for the outdoors and are excited to offer this unique culinary experience in Peterborough & The Kawarthas.

“Working in the restaurant/hospitality industry is mentally and physically exhausting. It’s taken us a little while, but we are finally starting to get a grasp on this lifestyle. Our way of recharging has always been to escape into nature. ‘Rare Escape’ is our inspiration to keep pushing forward,” Tyler said.

The traditional Rare restaurant will also transform into a Culinary Arts Studio, a space to host an array of different events aimed at bringing the community together through a love for local ingredients. The studio will host pop-up food events, community events, backdoor goods for retail (frozen meals, preserves and dehydrated food), culinary seminars taught by Chef Tyler Scott, local collaborations, intimate tasting dinners and more.

“Fleming College is proud to have contributed to Tyler’s successes over the years,” said Fleming College President Maureen Adamson. “His dedication to his craft and community makes him an exemplary alumnus and a great example of what Fleming is all about. We wish him the best of luck in his next adventure and can’t wait to see what he achieves next.”

Tyler will be honoured with the Alumnus of Distinction Award during Fleming College’s Convocation on June 17.
