This year’s Envirothon Competition features a special focus on climate change

Peterborough ON – (April 18, 2018) – The Peterborough-Kawarthas-Northumberland Region Envirothon Steering Committee will host the 2018 Regional Envirothon at Fleming College’s Sutherland Campus with events on April 24 and May 3.

The Ontario Envirothon is an educational program as well as a team-based competition for high school students who love the outdoors. The event is considered an incubator for the environmental leaders of tomorrow and is designed to prepare students for future green careers.

Each Envirothon team consists of five youths in grades 9-12. Organized by Forests Ontario, the program is broken down into regional competitions, culminating with an Ontario Envirothon Championship. Winners of the Ontario Envirothon Championship then represent the province at the North American Envirothon Championship. Students have the opportunity to win prizes and scholarships at all levels.

Envirothon competitions involve four core subject areas – forestry, aquatics, soils, and wildlife – as well as one current issue topic. In 2018, the current issue topic is climate change. Interactive workshops give the students hands-on experience in the subject areas, while team-based activities are designed to develop critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

This is the second year a Regional Envirothon will be held in the Peterborough-Kawarthas-Northumberland Region. The Regional Envirothon encompasses two days of activities:

Regional Training Workshop Day
Tuesday, April 24, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Fleming College, Sutherland Campus, 599 Brealey Dr., Peterborough

To prepare for the competition, all teams participate in a hands-on Training Workshop Day to ensure students have the required knowledge and skills for the competition day. Natural resource professionals deliver training sessions related to the five Envirothon core topics at outdoor stations.

Regional Competition Day
Thursday, May 3, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
